How soon should I get storm damage inspected?
As soon as it is safe to do so. Every rain after the storm pushes water further into the roof deck, and most policies expect you to act promptly once you are aware of damage. Because the inspection is free, there is no reason to wait and see.
Do I have to file an insurance claim to get an inspection?
No. The inspection is free and there is no obligation. You get the photographs and the written findings whether you file a claim, pay for a repair yourself, or decide to do nothing at all.
How long do I have to file a storm damage claim in Illinois?
Your own policy sets that deadline, not the contractor and not the state — most give a limited window measured from the date of loss, and many separately require prompt notice. Check your declarations page or call your carrier. Either way, get the damage documented now so the date of loss is not in dispute later.
What does storm damage actually look like from the ground?
Shingle granules collecting in the gutters or at the bottom of downspouts, dents in gutters, downspouts, siding or soffit, missing or lifted shingles along ridges and edges, bent vents or flashing, and water stains on upstairs ceilings. Hail bruising usually cannot be seen from the ground at all, which is why the roof needs walking.
